Bihar batter Vaibhav Suryavanshi became the youngest player to be sold in the history of IPL auction on Monday, November 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Suryavanshi was sold for a whopping Rs 1.10 crore to Rajasthan Royals after an intense bidding war with Delhi Capitals (DC).

Suryavanshi recently hit the fastest hundred by an Indian in Under-19 Tests, achieving the milestone against the Australia Under-19 team at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. The 13-year-old smashed his hundred in just 58 balls in his maiden red-ball match for the India Under-19 team.

His 58-ball hundred is only behind former England all-rounder Moeen Ali, who hit a 56-ball hundred for England Under-19 in 2005. Vaibhav hit 14 boundaries and 4 sixes in a destructive knock. Earlier, in January 2024, he became the fourth-youngest Indian to make his debut in a recorded first-class match at the age of 12 years and 284 days in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 against Shams Mulani’s Mumbai.

Vaibhav Suryavanshi made his Ranji Trophy debut in 2024

Suryavanshi played for Bihar in the 2023 edition of the Cooch Behar Trophy and in one of the games against Jharkhand, he scored 151 runs off 128 balls with the help of 22 fours and three sixes. He further scored 76 in the second innings of the same game. Suryavanshi also played in a quadrangular series involving India U19 A, India U19 B, England U19 and Bangladesh U19. He got scores of 53, 74, 0, 41 and 0 in the tournament.

In a media interaction after Vaibhav Suryvanshi’s Ranji debut, his father, Sanjeev revealed that the young teenager participated in six major tournaments in 2023. He also said it’s a matter of pride for his son to play against players like Ajinkya Rahane, Shivam Dube, and Dhawal Kulkarni. He described his son as an explosive batter and that he confident that Vaibhav will score a lot of runs in this tournament and will continue to showcase his batting skills for India in the future.

Sanjeev also mentioned his own love for cricket, stating that he used to play cricket in the village and noticed Vaibhav’s interest in the sport at the age of 5. Since then, he consistently guided Vaibhav to play cricket. When he was 10, Vaibhav used to play with senior players and performed well. Sanjeev initiated Vaibhav’s cricket training in Samastipur and later in Patna, where Vaibhav dedicatedly worked hard, resulting in his early entry into playing Ranji cricket for Bihar.

He has genuine power against both spin and pace: Mike Hesson

Meanwhile, former England captain Eoin Morgan was delighted with Suryavanshi’s sale calling it an ‘amazing story’ of the IPL. On the other hand, former RCB coach praised him for his batting technique.

“Beautiful in many ways, because in essence, every domestic tournament around the world has the ability to catapult you into the living rooms of families across the country. And what a country it happens in—it’s been the nature of the Indian Premier League from the very beginning. I mean, what an amazing story, and it’s only just started,” former England captain Eoin Morgan told Jio Cinema.

“He has genuine power against both spin and pace. Look at the comfort he has with both on the back foot and the front foot,” Mike Hesson, former RCB coach, said after seeing footage of his India A Test match hundred in Chennai. “He is a phenom, to be honest. He has so much energy to play a four-day game,” Robin Uthappa said.
