Michael Hussey backs Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli to do well: Silly to write off ‘proud’ India
Former cricketer Michael Hussey is wary of the Indian team, who have been recently taken a massive hit to their pride. Speaking ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Hussey said that India are a proud cricketing nation and would fight tooth and nail against Australia.
Speaking on Fox Cricket, Hussey pointed out Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in particular and said that while the duo had a poor series against New Zealand, one should not write off champion players. Hussey felt that it would be a little silly to write of a team of India’s quality.
“We’ll find out in that first Test match where they are at mentally and from a skill perspective as well. It was a shock to see them lose to New Zealand 3-0. You just don’t see that happen over there, ever, really. So they’ll be hurt by this – India and they’ve got a lot of proud players and a lot of quality,” Mike Hussey said on Fox Sports.
“You could hear earlier Gautam Gambhir talking about Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma not making runs. Well, the silliest thing you can do is to write off champion players and we’ve seen it so many times in the past. They come under a bit of criticism and come out and perform really well. So I’m backing those guys in particular to perform really strongly in Australia. They are proud Indians, they’re proud Test cricketers and they’ll put in a good performance. So I’m expecting to see the best of India, but I still think Australia will start favourites and will be primed to win this series,” he further added.
India arrive in Australia needing 4 wins in the series. If they manage to win 4 and not lose a single game, they would be able to qualify for the final of the World Test Championship. India, who dominated the WTC points table for the better part of the ongoing season have slipped to the second position and are at the risk of getting knocked out from the race to the WTC Final.
India begin their Test series at Perth on 22 November. It is likely that captain Rohit Sharma will miss the game due to the birth of his second child.
