Champions League: Valverde admits Real Madrid in unusual situation ahead of Atalanta clash

Real Madrid midfielder Fede Valverde has described the reigning champions’ current predicament as “unfamiliar” as they prepare for tonight’s critical Champions League group stage encounter against Atalanta. The Spanish giants find themselves in an uncharacteristic 24th place in the standings, adding urgency to their clash at La Dea.
Valverde acknowledged the challenges posed by their position but remains optimistic about turning things around. “We’re in a situation we’re not used to,” Valverde stated. “The only way to change this is to go out on the pitch at our best, showing everything we’ve worked on. Strength at the back and efficiency up front are crucial. We know Atalanta’s man-to-man marking style can be demanding, but it can also play to our advantage because of the players we have.”
The Uruguayan midfielder emphasized the need for calm and resilience. “It’s tough because we’re not used to moments like these; we’re always at the top. But we must accept that it’s part of football and trust the process. Hopefully, we’ll be celebrating titles by the end of the season.” Reflecting on his performance and past mistakes, particularly in a recent outing against Athletic Bilbao at San Mamés, Valverde admitted the importance of learning and adapting.
“What happened in San Mamés was useful for me to improve and ensure that mistakes like that don’t happen again. Atalanta will press hard, but we have fast, skilful players suited to these situations,” he said. Valverde also emphasized the need for compactness in their play, noting, “As midfielders, we like forwards who are focused on attacking and less on defending. It’s up to us to provide the support and maintain balance.”
The midfielder expressed delight at the return of key players like Vincius Jr. from injury, hailing the Brazilian for his “joy, footballing hunger, and energy.” He also touched on his evolving role as a team leader. “As a captain, I have to face challenges head-on and set an example. After San Mamés, I struggled to sleep, but my wife reminded me of the importance of staying strong for the team. Mistakes are part of football; what matters is how you move forward.”
Valverde’s dedication to Real Madrid remains unwavering, with only Antonio R¼diger logging more minutes this season. “I want to enjoy defending this badge to the fullest. It’s a source of pride for me. Even on tough days, I remind myself of the privilege of playing for the best team in the world. I want my children and parents to be proud of what I contribute to this club,” he said.
