South African pacer Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka and Pakistan’s upcoming all-format tour of South Africa, scheduled from December 10 to January 7, due to a groin injury sustained during the first Test. The 24-year-old fast bowler experienced discomfort on the fourth day while bowling and subsequently underwent scans. Cricket South Africa (CSA) confirmed that the scans revealed a strain in his right groin muscle.

According to CSA, Coetzee’s recovery is expected to take four to six weeks. This timeline might also see him miss the start of the SA20 league, which begins on January 9, 2024. He is part of the Joburg Super Kings squad, and their first game is set for January 11 against MI Cape Town.

To address Coetzee’s absence, South Africa has called up pacer Kwena Maphaka for the second Test against Sri Lanka, set to begin in Gqeberha on December 5. This adjustment aims to bolster South Africa’s bowling lineup as they continue the series.

“Proteas Men’s fast bowler Gerald Coetzee has been ruled out of the second Test against Sri Lanka and the upcoming all-format tour against Pakistan due to a groin injury. The 24-year-old experienced discomfort while bowling on day four of the first Test at Hollywoodbets Kingsmead Stadium in Durban on Saturday. Results of the scan revealed a right groin muscle strain. His recovery period is estimated to be between four to six weeks. Uncapped DP World Lions fast bowler Kwena Maphaka has been added to the squad,” read the statement from Cricket South Africa.

Coetzee picked up a total of 4 wickets in the first Test, which South Africa won by 233 runs.
