Sunil Gavaskar has suggested that India captain Rohit Sharma needs to do some exercises before coming to the crease to bat in a bid to overcome his footwork issues. Rohit once again failed to make a mark on Day 2 of the pink-ball Test with the bat as the Indian skipper was dismissed for just 6 runs in the match.

This meant that Rohit’s return to No.6 has been a failure as he scored a total of 9 runs in both innings. The striking feature about Rohit’s dismissal in both innings was that he was caught in the crease by Scott Boland in the first innings and Pat Cummins in the second one. During Day 2, Rohit was trapped in front of the stumps as well by Mitchell Starc, where his footwork was susceptible. However, the Indian skipper got a lucky reprieve as it was a no-ball.

Speaking to India Today after the day’s play, Gavaskar said that Rohit’s feet aren’t moving as they should and he needs to do a bit of warm-up to get the circulation going in his legs. The Indian legend said that the star batter has been a slow started as far as feet movement is concerned and it becomes more pronounced as he ages.

The Indian legend concluded by saying that Rohit may need to do some jogging or running before coming to take the first ball.

“I think the feet aren’t moving as they should. He needs to do a little bit of exercise before coming to the crease and try to get some circulation going in the legs. He has always been a slow starter as far as feet movement is concerned. It’s not just a recent problem. The older you get, the more pronounced it becomes. So, that is something maybe he needs to look to do. When he comes in to bat, maybe run in a little bit, so that the circulation is there. Do some jogging before you take the first ball,” said Gavaskar.

India are left on the brink of a defeat after Day 2 as they have lost 5 wickets and still trail Australia by 29 runs.
