BBL veteran Peter Siddle signs deal with Melbourne Stars at the age of 40
Peter Siddle, a seasoned campaigner in Australian cricket, has joined the Melbourne Stars for the upcoming Big Bash League season, completing their squad. The 40-year-old veteran seamer brings a wealth of experience to the Stars, still chasing their maiden BBL title. Although he was originally signed by the Stars during the league’s inaugural season in 2011. However, Siddle did not play for them due to international commitments. Instead, he began his Big Bash journey with the Melbourne Renegades in the 3rd season of BBL before moving to the Adelaide Strikers, where he spent six successful seasons.
Siddle reinvented himself as a T20 bowler during his time with the Strikers, and played a pivotal role in their maiden title win during the 7th season of t5he tournament. In the 2017-18 final, he delivered a match-winning spell, taking 3-17 against the Hobart Hurricanes. After his time in Adelaide, Siddle returned to the Renegades last summer on a one-year deal, which marked the homecoming of the Victorian native.
Peter Siddle to play his 10th BBL season
Across nine Big Bash seasons, Siddle has played 83 matches and took 99 wickets at an economy rate of 7.57. His presence is expected to bolster the Stars’ bowling attack and provide invaluable leadership to a team eager to break their play-off drought of four consecutive seasons.
Speaking about his return to the Stars, Siddle expressed his excitement about coming full circle. “It’s great to be back at the Stars after being one of the original signings. Playing at the MCG is always special, and I’m looking forward to contributing to this group in any way I can,” he said in a statement.
Will Melbourne Stars end their title-drought?
The Stars’ General Manager, Blair Crouch, highlighted Siddle’s ongoing ability and leadership qualities. “Peter is still bowling at a really high level, and his recent performances in the One-Day Cup for Victoria, where he took 10 wickets in five games, show his class. His experience on and off the field will be invaluable for our squad,” Crouch stated.
The Stars have made notable moves ahead of the 14th season of the Big Bash League, as they also secured English all-rounder Tom Curran and selected England opener Ben Duckett as their top draft pick. Marcus Stoinis is likely to step into the captaincy role following Glenn Maxwell’s resignation.
