AUS vs IND: Yashasvi Jaiswal scores composed fifty in maiden Australia Test

Yashasvi Jaiswal made a strong impression on Day 2 of the Perth Test as he scored his maiden fifty in Australia on Saturday, November 23. Jaiswal scored his fifty in 123 balls as he hit 5 boundaries during the knock and took minimum risk while doing it. The southpaw was on a mission to make amends for his failure in the first innings, where he was dismissed for an 8-ball duck.
India had taken control on Day 2 as they dismissed Australia for 104, thanks to a brilliant 5-wicket haul from Jasprit Bumrah. The onus was then on the openers to get India a good start as they were looking to bat the hosts out of the contest. Jaiswal had a tentative start to his innings but was able to get his first boundary in the third over off Mitchell Starc. Following that Jaiswal was able to show intent and also continued to be measured with his aggression.
He did have a little banter with Starc during the 19th over of the innings, but would ensure he didn’t lose his focus and was unbeaten on 42 as India went into tea on Day 2. After the break, Jaiswal did get beaten on a couple of occasions but would go on to score his 9th fifty in Tests.
Perth Test, Day 2: Live Updates
This was incidentally the slowest fifty of his career, with the previous one being in his debut Test against West Indies. This was also Jaiswal’s 8th fifty in 2024 as he continued his golden run in Tests. The southpaw also broke a 16-year-old record that was held by current head coach Gautam Gambhir during his knock.
Jaiswal and Rahul would then complete their 100-run stand, the first by an Indian opening pair since 2004.
Jaiswal’s magical run in 2024
Jaiswal has been India’s best batter in the calendar year by a country mile. The Mumbai batter would go on to score more than 1150 runs in 2024 with 2 hundreds and 8 fifties to his name. He is also the second-highest run-getter in Tests this year, behind Joe Root.
