After a challenging year marked by struggles to secure victories, the Indian women’s hockey team is eager for a fresh start in the new Olympic cycle as they prepare to defend their Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) title at home, beginning with a matchup against Malaysia on Monday.

India, having won the ACT title twice—in 2016 in Singapore and again in 2023 in Ranchi—enters this tournament aiming for a strong performance. Despite a disappointing year in the FIH Pro League, where the team managed only two wins, one draw, and suffered 13 losses across 16 matches, they hope to turn their fortunes around on home turf.

The Indian squad for the ACT features a balanced mix of seasoned players and emerging talent under the leadership of captain Salima Tete. Striker Navneet Kaur will serve as vice-captain, bringing experience and firepower to the forward line. India will compete against five other nations in the tournament: China, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand, with China, the reigning Olympic silver medalists, being a particularly formidable opponent.

In defense, India will rely on a solid backline featuring Udita, Jyoti, Ishika Chaudhary, Sushila Chanu Pukhrambam, and Vaishnavi Vitthal Phalke, all experienced defenders known for their resilience. Midfield duties will be anchored by Tete, with support from Neha, Sharmila Devi, Manisha Chauhan, Sunelita Toppo, and Lalremsiami, known for their high-energy style of play.

Leading India’s attack will be Navneet Kaur, Sangita Kumari, Deepika, Preeti Dubey, and Beauty Dungdung, all expected to drive scoring opportunities. Veteran goalkeeper Savita, a former captain, and emerging talent Bichu Devi Kharibam will share the goalkeeping responsibilities.

Returning to the squad are Sushila and Beauty Dungdung, both having completed rehabilitation and ready to contribute. India enters the tournament as one of the favorites alongside China, ranked sixth globally, with three-time champions South Korea and two-time winners Japan also posing tough challenges.

This tournament marks a new chapter for the Indian women’s team, under the guidance of coach Harendra Singh, as they set their sights on building a stronger foundation and aiming for success in the lead-up to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
